About
Canada hosted its second Winter Games at Vancouver 2010, with the mountain venues at Whistler providing a spectacular backdrop. Six Irish athletes competed across four sports. Aoife Hoey - at 6ft 4in the tallest woman at the Games - carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony and piloted the two-woman bobsleigh with brakewoman Claire Bergin to a 17th-place finish, a result that stood as Ireland's best of those Games. Both women had converted to bobsleigh from track and field; Hoey from triple jumping and Bergin from 400m sprinting.
Patrick Shannon finished 25th in skeleton. Former Dublin minor Gaelic footballer Shane O'Connor finished 45th in the alpine slalom and carried the flag at the Closing Ceremony. Peter-James Barron competed in cross-country skiing and Kirsty McGarry in alpine skiing.
