Canoeist Robert Hendrick has been chosen to be Team Ireland flag bearer for tomorrow’s 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony (16th August) .
Hendrick admitted “I never expected it at all because there are so many great young athletes here so it was a great surprise and I feel very honoured and privileged – it just feels great”
He thanked Martin Burke, Chef de Mission for all the preparation so far. Hendrick said ” we had a fantastic training camp at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and are all looking forward to getting into competition – the Team Ireland set up in Nanjing is fantastic”
Hendrick is being coached in Nanjing by three time Irish Olympian Eoin Rheinisch.
The sports programme is based on that of the Olympic Games. The Youth Olympic Games brings together talented young athletes aged from 15 to 18 from around the World (approx 204 countries will participate with approx 3800 athletes). In addition to our athletes we will have a Young Ambassador representing Ireland – Leah Ewart who will act as a coordinator of the Cultural & Educational Programme during the Games. The Games will be from 16 to 28th August 2014. The full list of sports schedules and details can be found direct on the Nanjing YOG website http://www.nanjing2014.org/en/ and updates will be made on www.olympicsdev.wpengine.com and our facebook https://www.facebook.com/teamirelandoci and twitter https://twitter.com/olympiccouncil feeds.
