Athletics

  • Mark English made history with a landmark performance in the 800m, surging to victory in a meeting record time of 1:43.85 at the Shanghai Diamond League. The Donegal athlete becomes the first Irish male to win a Diamond League race, adding his name to a growing list of Irish winners on the circuit alongside Ciara Mageean, Rhasidat Adeleke and Sarah Healy. His performance marks a significant milestone for Irish middle-distance running on the global stage.
  • In the field, Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) delivered an impressive win in the women’s hammer throw at the Halplus Werfertage meet in Halle, Germany. Tuthill produced a best throw of 71.98m in the final round, the second-longest of her career, to secure victory.

Equestrian

Ireland secured victory in dramatic fashion at the EEF Series Nations Cup in Borgo La Caccia – Bedizzole, overcoming hosts Italy in a tense jump-off.

Led by Chef d’Équipe Jessica Kürten, the Irish team of Niall Talbot, Seamus Hughes Kennedy, Harry Allen and Mark McAuleyfinished on four faults after two rounds, with standout double clear rounds from Talbot (Charming Dream Z) and Allen (Edison De Hus).

The competition went to a jump-off, where Harry Allen and Edison De Hus delivered under pressure, producing a fast and clear round. Italy’s Piergiorgio Bucci, riding Casalia DG, dropped a pole and retired, sealing the win for Ireland.

Triathlon

There was a strong international showing from LA28 Scholar Hollie Elliott, who claimed third place at the Asia Triathlon Cup in Tam Chuc with a total race time of 1:03:08.

Elliott’s race was built on consistency across all disciplines:

  • T1: 00:34
  • Bike: 32:38
  • T2: 00:42
  • Run: 18:40

Her podium finish continues a positive run of form on the international circuit.

Sailing

After a week of racing across a wide range of conditions, Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove continued to adapt well as the days unfolded, posting results of 10th, 12th and then finishing strongly with a fifth-place result to secure 14th overall in Gold Fleet at the 49er World Championships in Quiberon, France.

Despite narrowly missing out on the Final Series, Dickson was positive when reflecting on the regatta overall.

“Overall we’re quite happy with our performance. Unfortunately the opening day left us on the back foot, but we improved steadily throughout the week, gaining places each day and finishing within touching distance of the medal series”.
