Ireland 33rd out of 49 in Europe

Russia topped the medal table in Europe with 72 overall medals.Great Britain were second in Europe with 47 overall medals.

Its interesting to note that 9 years ago Great Britain began to establish a high performance system based on targeted sports , targeted athletes at Olympic and development level supported by world class coaches and system support. They have shown what is possible with the appropriate investment in National Federation programmes. Quality systems can be established in a short time period with a significant medal return on a consistent basis.

Ireland’s high performance system was established at the same time . To date only 4 medals have been won at Olympic level in the past 3 Olympic Games in 2 sports.
