Ireland in 7th place overnight

Sarah Ennis is in an impressive 10th place on Horseware Stellor Rebound at the Alltech World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.The Meath-based eventer was last to go of three Irish riders on day one of dressage and scored an impressive 48.5 penalties.Britain’s William Fox-Pitt on Chilli Morning with 37.5pens, declared it was his stallion’s “best test ever”.Defending champion Michael Jung from Germany showed his talent when slotting into second place with 40.7pens on the relatively-inexperienced nine-year old mare FisherRocana.

Germany have taken an early lead in the team event. New Zealand lay second, ahead of Britain and the US, with just one penalty covering the three nations.Carlow’s Sam Watson scored 59.8pens on Horseware Bushman to lie equal 32nd, leaving the team in seventh place of 16 nations, while the first of Ireland’s two individuals, Clare Abbot (Euro Prince) was 28th overnight on 57.3pens.

Today -Friday- sees Irish team members Joseph Murphy and Aoife Clark undertake their dressage tests, along with individual rider Camilla Speirs.   The vital eventing cross-country phase take place in Normandy on Saturday, with medals being decided after Sunday’s show jumping.
