Katie Taylor wins the first bout in China

Katie Taylor is through to the last 16 in the first of five bouts in China.  At the seventh AIBA World Women’s Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Qinhuangdao, against Tunisia’s Tim Jouini she won an impressive 19-6.

Jouine a bronze medal winner at the World Championships in Barbados 2010.

Ceire Smith from Cavan BC flyweight got Ireland off to a winning start with a third round stoppage against Veglina Svetlana of Tajikistan. Smith dominated from the opening bell and forced Svetlana into standing counts in rounds one, two and three before the ref stopped the contest 1.28 into the third with Smith 16-4.

But Dublin middleweight Sinead Kavanagh (Drimnagh BC) is out of the tournament after losing out 23-19 to Francelis Paez Carmona of Venezuela at the Olympic Stadium in Qinhuangdao.
