Keane 4th in Continental Cup Triathlon

Olympic hopeful Bryan Keane missed out on a second podium finish in successive weekends as he had to settle for fourth in the Puerto Rico Continental Cup Triathlon.

The 1500m swim strung out the field with USA’s Ian Boggs emerging from the water first in 19mins 15secs. Keane was a short way back in 19mins 43secs but the gap was large enough that a breakaway of six managed to slip away. Over the flat 40km bike course they worked well together to extend their advantage to some 2 minutes by the time they hit the second transition.

From the chase pack Keane was clearly in good running form as he picked off two ahead of him and outran the chase pack contenders, clocking 29mins 42secs for the 10 kilometres. With the fastest run of the day by some margin, Keane will be ruing a missed opportunity to stand on the top step of the podium.

“4th today in Puerto Rico. It was good, bad and ugly.” Keane tweeted after the race.

The result sees Keane jump a further two places on the ITU Points list to 54th after scoring 158 points on his Puerto Rican quest. Next up is the first leg of the World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi on March 7th.
