The Team Ireland Boxing Team is made up of eleven athletes – seven male and four female. While this boxing tournament was initially part of the Tokyo 2020 qualification process, it is now a standalone event, following recent decisions by the IOC with regard to recognizing AIBA.
Team Ireland field their strongest team at the European Games, and the athletes will be treating this as a practice run for the Olympic Games. They have spent the last couple of weeks preparing in Belfast, with sparring partners from around the world.
World Champion Kellie Harrington is one of the best known names on the team, the 29 year old Dubliner is competing in her first multi-sport event this week, and her first match takes place on the 23rd June. Michaela Walsh, Kurt Walker and Dean Gardiner are all competing in their second European Games, having competed in Baku in 2015.
Baku silver medallist Brendan Irvine was forced to withdraw just prior to the Games due to injury.
Team Ireland boxers are a strong squad, with plenty of strength and depth. Tony Browne, Regan Buckley, James McGivern, Kieran Molloy, Michael Nevin, Aoife O’Rourke, and Grainne Walsh are all making their European Games debut in Minsk.
The Boxing at the European Games takes place in the Uruchie Stadium in the outskirts of Minsk and runs for the full duration of the Games, beginning on the 21st June and running until the 30th June.
A variation of boxing appeared in the first Ancient Olympic Games in 688 BC, it was introduced to the Modern Olympic Games programme in 1904.
In Minsk both the men’s and women’s tournaments are single-elimination. The men’s bouts are made up of three rounds of three minutes each, while the women’s bouts are four rounds of two minutes each. Boxers get points for successful punches and the boxer with the most points wins the bout.
