William 'Billy' Barnes was the Irish flyweight champion in 1944 and 1948, and a competitor at the 1947 European Championships, who competed in the men's flyweight boxing at the 1948 London Olympic Games. A stylist from the Windsor Club in Belfast with sharp footwork and a crisp punch, Barnes was ahead after two rounds against Frantisek Majdloch of Czechoslovakia before a badly cut left eye sustained in the third round proved decisive in a narrow points loss.
