Berkeley and teammate Sean Dollman made their Olympic debuts on a night of extreme heat and humidity - 26 degrees Celsius with 89 per cent humidity - conditions that made it one of the most difficult long-distance running experiences of that era. A product of the American college system like many of his Irish teammates, Berkeley was a talented distance runner who had established himself in the NCAA circuit. His Olympic appearance was the culmination of a journey that encompassed years of training on two continents.
