BIOGRAPHY

Roisin McGettigan, from Inbhear Dee AC in Wicklow Town, specialised in the 3000 metres steeplechase.

She was a four-time All-American at Providence College, coached by Ray Treacy. She competed in her first Olympic Games in 2008 in Beijing, and after finishing second in her qualifying heat in the 3000 metres steeplechase she placed 14th in the final.

In 2014 she was retroactively awarded the bronze medal for the 1500 metres at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships.

Among her other achievements are the Irish indoor mile record in 2009, second place at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2007, 10th at the World Championships in Osaka in 2007 and ninth at the World Athletics Final in 2005.

She is a co-founder of Dare to Believe, the Olympic Federation of Ireland's schools programme, which brings Olympians into schools to share the Olympic values with young people, and was appointed to the IOC's Olympic Education Commission in 2022.

In November 2023 she became President of the Irish Olympians' Association, succeeding Olympic champion Ronnie Delany. The association supports Irish athletes who have competed at the Olympic Games, providing engagement and networking opportunities and helping them promote the Olympic values in their communities.
