Montreal 1976
17th Jul 1976 – 1st Aug 1976
About
Montreal 1976 was haunted by financial difficulty and the boycott of 28 African nations over the IOC's refusal to ban New Zealand following a rugby tour to South Africa.
It was nonetheless a Games of near-misses for Ireland. Sean Drea finished fourth in the single sculls final - the finest result by an Irish rower in Olympic competition to that point - and Eamonn Coghlan also finished fourth in the 1500 metres final, a result that confirmed him as one of the finest middle-distance runners in the world and a future medal contender.
Rower Frank Moore carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony.
