James 'Jamie' Wilkinson won silver in the Flying Dutchman class alongside David Wilkins at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.
Wilkinson grew up in Howth, County Dublin, where sailing was central to his early development. He met Wilkins while studying at Trinity College Dublin, though their Olympic partnership was formed only a few months before the Games.
The sailing events were held at Tallinn in Estonia, some 1,500km from Moscow. The pair were runners-up in four of their seven races, and held a close contest with the leading Spanish crew until overtaking them in the penultimate race, which left them assured of silver before the final race began.
