With less than three years to go until the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission is beginning its fifth visit to the South American host city. Over the next two days, the Commission, led by its Chair, Nawal El Moutawakel, will review the progress being made on the Rio Games and be updated by the Rio 2016 Organising Committee and its partners on their up-coming plans.
Running from 1 September until 2 September, the meetings will allow the Commission to hear reports on areas of Games preparations as diverse as venue management, culture, education, procurement, venues and technology. The Commission will also participate in working groups that will look at the services to be provided to those attending the Games, such as the athletes, National Olympic Committees, International Federations, spectators and the media, as well as the Paralympic Games. This is the Commission’s second visit to Rio this year. The Coordination Commission visits the host city twice yearly as of four years out from the Games.

Rio de Janeiro was elected on 2 October 2009 as the host city of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark. Rio was elected in the third round of voting, beating the cities of Chicago (United States), Tokyo (Japan) and Madrid (Spain). Rio defeated Madrid in the third round of voting by 66 votes to 32, with Chicago and Tokyo already having been eliminated in the first and second rounds respectively. Rio 2016 will have 28 sports on its programme and will run from 5 till 21 August 2016.
