The Olympic Council of Ireland has learned with great sadness of the death of Tommy Brennan, who passed away at the age of 74.
Tommy was an iconic figure in Irish equestrian sport, with an individual fourth place in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics with Kilkenny marking the beginning of an illustrious career.
The combination went on to achieve a team eventing gold medal in the 1966 World Championships at Burghley, an occasion that Tommy always referred to as the highlight of his career.
In 1997 he was inducted into the Irish Sports Council Hall of Fame for Services to Equestrian Sport, following the Gold Badge of Honour he received from the world governing body, the FEI, in 1985.
Winner of nine RDS National Championships, Tommy drew international praise for his design of the European Eventing Championships course at Punchestown in 1991. He went on to design the Punchestown course again in 2003.
The OCI extends its sincere condolences to Tommy Brennan’s family and to his many friends and colleagues.
