The Wexford man finished over 5.5 seconds behind current leader Martins Dukurs of Latvia who set a new track record during his first run. Shannon reflected in the mixed zone;
“I was disappointed at my first run. The tension and excitement, plus the unbelieveable atmosphere at the start gate got to me. I have never seen anything like it before, with hundreds of fans roaring encouragement and waving flags. Nothing I ever experienced in World Cup racing had prepared me for this mind blowing Olympic experience.
Once the first run was over, I relaxed a bit and was pleased at my second run. The track is very fast, by far the fastest in the world. From the push off, you are hurtling into the first corner at 50k per hour and hit 85k on the second bend – double the normal speeds of World Cup racing.
The track is also very technical, with very clever twists and curves that are really challenging.
The Irish support at the finish straight was amazing. They’ve come from all parts of Canada and Ireland – and are making a huge impression at the Sliding Centre in Whistler. They have boosted my confidence big time and I’m determined to turn in a good performance or two tonight”.These Olympics have been a huge learning experience for me and I’m determined to give it a go for the next Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, in four years time.
