Golf returned to the Olympic programme at Rio 2016 after a 112-year absence. The Olympic tournament is played as 72-hole individual stroke play for men and women, mirroring the format of the sport's major championships, at a single course over four rounds.

Ireland has been represented at every edition since its return, with Shane Lowry serving as a flag bearer at Paris 2024 and Rory McIlroy narrowly missing the podium at both Tokyo 2020 (tied fourth) and Paris 2024 (tied fifth), while Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow have flown the flag on the women's side.
