About Triathlon

The Olympic triathlon combines a 1.5km open-water swim, a 40km bike leg and a 10km run, completed back-to-back without a break, testing endurance across three disciplines in a single, gruelling event.

Emma Davis became Ireland's first Olympic triathlete, competing at Beijing 2008 despite two fractures in her sacrum sustained in a bike crash just a week before the Games. Gavin Noble became the first Irish man to compete in the sport at London 2012, the same Games at which Aileen Reid made her Olympic debut; Reid went on to compete again at Rio 2016 alongside Bryan Keane. Carolyn Hayes and Russell White represented Ireland at Tokyo 2020.
