Taylor into Olympic Final

Katie Taylor is through to the women’s Olympic lightweight final after a 17-9 win over Mavzuna Chorieva this afternoon.

Taylor guaranteed at least a silver medal with a comfortable victory over the Tajikistani boxer, winning every round of the semi-final at the ExCel.

The Bray boxer took a 3-1 lead in round 1, attacking from the start with little response from Chorieva.

Taylor connected with two strong punches in the next round and looked in total control as she extended the lead to 7-3, and it was all but over following another strong round to move 13-6 in front.

Chorieva tried to bridge the gap in the final round but it had little say and the eight-point win set up a final clash on Thursday at 4.45pm.

Taylor will meet Russia’s Sofya Ochigava after she won 17-11 in her semi-final.

Taylor told the press afterwards: “It is incredible. This is a dream come true for me.

“To be boxing in front of so many Irish fans, it is better than I thought it could be. I feel like I am in heaven right now, it is amazing.

“It is going to be a 50-50 fight in the final, the pressure is always going to be on both boxers as we are both boxing for gold.

“I have to go back, refocus for tomorrow and I would love to bring gold back for my country.”
