Team Ireland adds to athletics lineup for Rio 2016

13 July 2016 – Dublin, Ireland: The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) and Athletics Ireland are pleased to announce a further eight athletes, who will compete as part of the athletics squad and represent Team Ireland at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

 

The athletes announced today join a 17-strong athletics team that will compete in Rio. The eight chosen athletes include European 1500m bronze medallist Ciara Mageean (UCD).

 

 

 

The eight athletes selected today are:

 

  • Thomas Barr – Men’s 400m Hurdles
  • Mark English – Men’s 800m
  • Ciara Everard – Women’s 800m
  • Michelle Finn – Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase
  • Ciara Mageean – Women’s 1,500m
  • Kerry O’Flaherty – Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase
  • Tori Pena – Women’s Pole Vault
  • Sara Treacy – Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase

 

Team Ireland’s Chef de Mission for Rio 2016 Kevin Kilty said:

 

“Today’s selections add to a very strong and talented athletics squad. Ciara Mageean’s performance at the European Championships in Amsterdam is a great sign of what this squad can achieve in Rio. With only 23 days to go, Team Ireland is very well prepared and the athletes can’t wait to go out there and give it everything they’ve got.”

 

Athletics Ireland High Performance Director Kevin Ankrom said:
“We are delighted with the team selection for Rio, we believe this team of athletes will produce strong competitive performances on the global stage.

 

“It is fantastic to be working closely with the Olympic Council of Ireland – representing Team Ireland at the Olympic Games in Rio is very special.

 

“The team is now looking forward to fine-tuning their preparations at our Olympic Training Centre in Uberlandia.”
