Update from Cormac Comerford – Alpine Skier

Winter Olympic hopeful Cormac Comerford is currently competing on the Alpine Skiing circuit.

‘We are less than a week out from World Championships and 1 year from 2022 Winter Games. I’ve been able to put in some solid work towards achieving my season goals and putting myself in the best position for selection for the 2022 Winter Olympics come January 2022.

I’ve been training with my team ‘kronplatz racing center’, an international team across Europe since july and have been competing in FIS races since December. I won and came 3rd in FIS CIT Slalom in Alleghe, Italy just before christmas and achieved a personal best points score in my first Giant Slalom race of the season at the end of January in Kronplatz, Italy, pushing me closer to the top 10% in the world.

Despite the restrictions I was able to carry out my off -season training plan with the help from the sports team at TU Dublin and some alterations to the garden and the same goes for my main season thanks to so many organisations including the Snowsports Association of Ireland, Sport Ireland and the OFI . I feel incredibly blessed and grateful that the importance of elite sport has been recognised and to all the organisations who’ve facilitated us to continue training and competing to represent Ireland at the highest level.

There is a big line up for me this month with a few FIS races in Slovenia in the lead up to the world championships which starts for me on 18th of February then following that the Snowsports Association of Ireland will be hosting the first ever Irish National Championships. As I’ve been skiing and racing for over 14 years now I couldnt be more excited and proud to be a part of its inauguration.

Plan of February:

4-5 Krvavec (SLO), FIS Giant Slalom

10-11 Rogla (SLO), FIS Slalom

18 Cortina (ITA) World Ski Championships Giant Slalom qualifcation

19 Cortina (ITA) WSC Giant Slalom Final

20 Cortina (ITA) WSC Slalom qualification

21 Cortina (ITA) WSC Slalom final

25 Kronplatz (ITA) Irish National Champs Slalom

26 Kronplatz (ITA) Irish National Champs Giant Slalom

This will be my third Olympic games that I’m eligible for and the fire to wave the flag for Ireland burns always brighter since 10 year old Cormac stepped on skis at the slopes at the Ski Club of Ireland in Kilternan. Its been a long hard road getting to the position I am in today but its those years coupled with the extra support leading up to the Olympics that is the perfect storm that is helping me push my limits and the sport of ski racing in ireland further then ever.

Lots of love to everyone at home.’
