Aoife Cooke returned to competitive running in 2015 after several years away from the sport, entering the Cork Marathon that year, and went on to qualify for the Olympic Games.
She ran the marathon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where she did not finish. The race was run in Sapporo in severe heat, and around one in six of the field did not finish.
Cooke took up athletics at 11 with Ballincollig AC and won a scholarship to Arkansas Tech University. Recurrent stress fractures brought her back to Ireland, where she enrolled at University College Cork and qualified as a PE teacher. She is from Blarney, County Cork.
