Postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and held in front of empty stadiums, Tokyo 2020 nonetheless produced Ireland's greatest Games to that point. Kellie Harrington and Brendan Irvine carried the Irish flag together at the Opening Ceremony - Harrington would go on to win gold in lightweight boxing in an electric final watched by millions at home.
Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won gold in the lightweight double sculls - Ireland's first Olympic rowing gold. The women's four of Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty won bronze. Aidan Walsh won bronze in welterweight boxing. Rory McIlroy finished in joint 4th place in the mens' golf event.
