Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush by six shots, becoming only the second golfer from the Republic of Ireland to win a major, after Padraig Harrington.
He finished tied 22nd at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and tied 26th at Paris 2024, where he carried the Irish flag at the opening ceremony on the River Seine alongside Sarah Lavin.
Lowry caused a sensation in 2009 when he won the Irish Open at County Louth as a 22-year-old amateur, one of only two amateurs to win on the DP World Tour that year, turning professional the following week. He won the European Amateur Team Championship with Ireland in 2007 and 2008, took the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2015, and has played in three Ryder Cups for Europe. He won the 2026 Irish Open in Doonbeg by 11 shots.
He grew up in Clara, County Offaly, in a family steeped in GAA tradition: his father Brendan and uncles Sean and Mick all played on the Offaly team that won the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
