BIOGRAPHY
Colm O’Brien competed in the fencing at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games, qualifying from his first-round group in the individual épée – the only Irish fencer to advance beyond the opening stage – before being eliminated in the next round. A Trinity College Dublin student,
O’Brien had begun fencing at St Conleth’s College in Ballsbridge and progressed to the Salle Duffy where he was coached by Paddy Duffy. In team competition, the Irish fencing team competed in the foil, épée and sabre categories and engaged in six team bouts.
