BIOGRAPHY

Eoin Collins competed in the men’s doubles tennis at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games alongside Owen Casey, losing their opening round match to the Israeli combination by three sets to one.

Tennis returned to the Olympic programme for the first time since 1924 at Seoul, following a 14-year campaign by Philippe Chatrier, president of the international tennis federation, and its debut at Seoul was the beginning of a long association between Collins and Casey in international tennis.

Collins went on to compete again with Casey at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics where they were eliminated in the second round. After completing his leaving certificate at St. Fintan’s High School, Sutton, Dublin, in 1985, Collins took up a scholarship at Indiana University in the USA.

He was the #1 tennis player in the Irish rankings in 1990, 1993, and 1994. Collins was the winner of the Irish championship in 1990 and 1995, and won the first of his five Irish close singles championships in 1984 as a 15-year-old. He made his Davis Cup début against the Netherlands in 1987 and from then to 2004 he played in 20 Davis Cup ties. He had a respectable record winning 16 of his 35 matches.

A left-hander, his highest world singles ranking was #461, reached on 15 July 1991.
