Oliver Dingley

Diving

BIOGRAPHY

Oliver Dingley represented Ireland in the men’s 3 metre springboard diving at two Olympic Games – finishing 8th in the final at Rio 2016 and 25th in the preliminary round at Tokyo 2020.

His Rio performance was the first time an Irish diver had reached an Olympic final, and his final drew the highest RTÉ television audience of any sports event at those Games. Dingley was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and qualifies for Ireland through his grandmother, who is from Spike Island, Co. Cork. He played youth football for Middlesbrough and became British 1m springboard champion as a teenager, but was overlooked for the 2012 London Olympics despite finishing second in the British trials. He subsequently switched allegiance to Ireland in October 2014, having won a bronze medal in the 3m springboard at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

He qualified for Rio at the World Cup series early in 2016 – the first Irish diver at the Olympics since Dubliner Eddie Heron at London 1948. He became the first diver ever to represent Ireland at two Olympics when he competed at Tokyo 2020.
