Andy Hunter competed in the men's 100 metres freestyle at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, finishing 37th with a time of 56.09 seconds.
Hunter trained with the British team in Leeds ahead of the Munich Olympics and continued his progress after the Games, setting a new Irish 100m freestyle record of 53.10 seconds in 1973. His time bettered Donnacha O'Dea's historic 1968 mark by 6.8 seconds and cemented his reputation as one of Ireland's leading freestyle sprinters of the era.
