BIOGRAPHY

Brenda McGrory competed in the women's 100 metres butterfly at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

At the Games, McGrory produced the finest performance of the Irish swimming group, finishing 21st in the 100m butterfly while setting a new Irish record of 1:08.5, a time that would have been good enough for 10th place at the Mexico City Olympics four years earlier, highlighting the significant progress made by Irish swimming during the period.

She also helped the women's 4x100m medley relay team set a national record, despite the squad including an 800m freestyle specialist.

McGrory is also remembered for her vivid description of the atmosphere in the Olympic Village in the aftermath of the Munich Massacre: 'A stillness came over the place afterwards and I do remember there was an eerie feeling. It was a stunned silence really ...'
