Eugene Magee competed for Ireland in the men's hockey tournament at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, where Ireland made their first ever Olympic appearance in the sport and finished 10th.
He scored against Germany during the tournament - a moment he described as the highlight of his career. Magee grew up in Ballela, between Dromore and Banbridge, Co. Down, where he first picked up a stick playing hurling for Ballela GAC before taking up hockey at Banbridge Academy. He studied Quantity Surveying at Ulster University and later completed a Masters in Software Development at Queen's University Belfast. He played professionally for HGC in the Netherlands, KHC Dragons in Belgium - where he won two national titles - and Crefelder HTC in Germany, before returning to his home club Banbridge HC.
He made his senior Ireland debut in 2005 and in May 2015 became the first Ulsterman to reach 200 caps for Ireland. He retired in 2020 as Ireland's record cap holder with 295 appearances and more than 60 goals. His brother Owen also played for Banbridge and Ireland.
