The first Olympic Games held in South America, Rio 2016 brought a breakthrough for Irish sport and the emergence of a golden generation in rowing. Paddy Barnes, a double Olympic bronze medallist, carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony.
Annalise Murphy won silver in Laser Radial sailing after a heart-stopping final race. Gary O'Donovan and Paul O'Donovan won silver in the lightweight double sculls - the O'Donovan brothers becoming overnight stars and launching Ireland's golden era in rowing.
Thomas Barr reached the 400m hurdles final, finishing fourth in a national record.
