Gerard Victory was one of Ireland's most prolific composers, producing more than 230 works across his career including ten operas, four symphonies, and orchestral, chamber and film music spanning styles from tonal to avant-garde, and competed in the music competition at the 1948 London Olympic Games with his song True Greatness. From Dublin, he read Celtic Studies at University College Dublin and Music at Trinity College Dublin, later earning a doctorate in 1972. Largely self-taught as a composer, he received some formal training from John F. Larchet, Alan Rawsthorne and Walter Beckett, and attended the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music. He went on to a long career with Radio Telefis Eireann, eventually becoming Head of Music. His papers are held at Trinity College Dublin and the Contemporary Music Centre holds a number of his scores.
