Helsinki 1952 marked the debut of the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games, transforming the political dynamics of international sport for the next four decades.

John McNally, a twenty-year-old from Belfast's White City Boxing Club, won silver in the bantamweight final - Ireland's first Olympic boxing medal - losing a split decision to Finland's Pentti Hamalainen on the final day of the Games in front of a partisan home crowd, with Finland yet to win a gold medal.

Terry Milligan also reached the boxing semi-finals before losing to the eventual light-welterweight gold medallist.

Helsinki was the last occasion on which Ireland entered competitors in the Olympic arts competitions; twenty-two Irish artists, composers, writers and architects submitted works across five categories.

Boxer Paddy Carroll carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony. Ireland won one silver medal.
