BIOGRAPHY

Humbert Craig was one of the leading landscape painters of twentieth-century Ireland, celebrated for his vivid depictions of the Irish countryside - particularly the rivers, glens and coastlines of County Antrim and Donegal.

He competed in the painting section of the arts competition at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, submitting a work entitled After a Fresh on the Dun River, one of a number of paintings he made of the River Dun in County Antrim.

Largely self-taught as an artist, Craig came from a mixed background - his father Alexander Craig was a tea merchant of Northern Irish origin and his mother Maria Mentelen came from a Swiss family with a tradition of painting. He painted extensively across Ireland as well as in Switzerland, the south of France and northern Spain.
