Jimmy Mooney competed in the Firefly class at the 1948 London Olympic Games at Torbay - the first appearance of yachting under Irish colours at the Olympics - finishing 16th of 21 competitors. Firefly class competitors drew lots for boats supplied by the organising committee. Reserve helmsman Desmond St John O'Sullivan brought his own yacht to Torbay and sailed against the Olympic boat daily to enable Mooney to tune to racing pitch. A fourth place finish in the first race of the seven-race series was his best individual result.
