Annalise Murphy won silver in the Laser Radial at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in a medal race described as a masterclass in fickle conditions beneath Sugarloaf Mountain, the culmination of an eight-year pursuit of Olympic success that had begun with a heartbreaking fourth place at London 2012.
A three-time Olympian who also competed at Tokyo 2020, she won the European Championship title on home waters in Dublin Bay in 2013, reached the top eight at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships, and in 2017 won the Moth World Championship - switching class entirely for a single season before crewing on eight legs of the Volvo Ocean Race with Turn the Tide on Plastic, skippered by Dee Cafari.
She was named Irish Times and Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Year in 2016 and served as grand marshal of the Dublin St Patrick's Day Parade in 2017. She started sailing at the age of seven and is the daughter of Cathy MacAleavey, who sailed for Ireland in the 470 class at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.
