Curly (Treen) Morris joined the Irish Dragon class crew at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games from race three onwards, replacing Owen Delaney who had developed a severe case of glandular fever, and sailed alongside Harry Byrne and Robin Hennessy to a 16th place finish of 26 boats.
A Finn specialist and champion in both the Finn and GP14 classes, Morris had travelled to Munich primarily to assist in training Kevin McLaverty, who was competing in the Finn dinghy with a brand new boat, mast and sail as supplied to each competitor. He also spent time coaching David Wilkins and Sean Whitaker in the Tempest, working specifically on their use of spinnakers.
Morris went on to become a World Sailing International Measurer for the Optimist and GP14 classes. His connection to Irish Olympic sailing extended to the next generation: at the 2026 GP14 World Championship at Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, his daughter Mel crewed the winning boat, skippered by fellow Olympian Ger Owens.
