Mick Hoey competed in the men's 5,000 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, having won the national three-mile title in 13:51.00, inside the Olympic qualifying standard, in his very first three-mile race.
A resident of Glasnevin, Dublin, who attended O'Connell's Boys School, Hoey became involved in athletics at seventeen and benefited from the coaching of Cyril White and the support of Billy Morton at Clonliffe Harriers. He qualified for the Olympic Games at twenty, the youngest athlete in the field when Herb Elliott set his world mile record at Santry in 1958.
His Rome Olympic appearance was followed by a distinguished academic career: the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of California at Berkeley, he moved into engineering and academia after the Games.
