Paddy Sheriff was one of the starting five for Ireland in their opening basketball game against Mexico at the 1948 London Olympic Games. From Athlone and a member of the Western Command contingent, he competed alongside his brother Dermot - both brothers were married to sisters of Bill Jackson. He was introduced to the competition in the second half against Cuba. Ireland finished 23rd and last of 23 nations.
