Rhys McClenaghan won gold on the pommel horse at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Ireland's first Olympic medal in gymnastics.
He made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, where he became the first Irish gymnast to reach an Olympic final, qualifying joint second before finishing seventh.
McClenaghan began gymnastics at six with Rathgael Gymnastics Club. His breakthrough came in 2018 when he won Commonwealth and European gold on the pommel horse, beating the reigning Olympic champion Max Whitlock on both occasions. In 2019, still in his teens, he became the first Irish gymnast to win a World Championship medal, taking bronze. He is from Newtownards, County Down.
