Tom Smith competed in the individual and team foil at the 1948 London Olympic Games as one of the pioneering members of Irish competitive fencing. He lost all seven of his individual foil bouts at the Palace of Engineering at Wembley. Ireland lost to France 16-0 and Egypt 9-0 in the team foil.
Tom Smith of Dublin first appeared in the fencing scene in the early 1940s. A member and past president of Achilles Fencing Club in Dublin, he was selected with fellow clubmate Nick Thuillier in 1948 to compete at the Olympic Games in London. Smith continued to fence with the Achilles Club throughout the 1950s, competing internationally for Ireland on multiple occasions.
