John Alex "Lexie" Tynan was an Irish athlete and rugby player. While at Belvedere College in Dublin, Tynan played rugby union for Old Belvedere. He was part of the team that won back-to-back Leinster Senior Cups in 1951 and 1952. Tynan also played for Leinster and had a trial for the Ireland national rugby union team. As an athlete, Tynan competed in sprinting, setting a record time in the 220 yards for the Irish Schools Senior Boys in 1951, and later became the Irish sprint champion. Tynan was selected to represent Ireland at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, but he did not compete in any races.
In the mid-1980s, Tynan emigrated to Canada, moving to Burlington, Ontario. In Canada, Tynan founded two businesses and continued to work in rugby, becoming a scout for Rugby Canada. He also coached at school and club level and worked as a national selector.
