Mark Howard travelled to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games as a substitute member of the Ireland men's 4x100 metres relay squad, one of two travelling reserves alongside Donal McCarthy for a squad also comprising Paul Brizzel, Gary Ryan, Tom Comyns and John McAdorey.
The Irish team set a new national record of 39.26 seconds in their heat - a record that still stood more than two decades later. Howard was one of Ireland's leading short sprinters around the turn of the century, winning the Irish national senior 100 metres title and becoming a European Under-23 bronze medallist.
His personal bests of 10.41 seconds for the 100 metres (2000) and 20.88 seconds for the 200 metres (2001) placed him among the leading Irish sprinters of his generation.
Born 18 April 1980, Howard was a youthful presence on the international circuit in the early 2000s and also competed for Ireland at the senior European Championships.
