Rio 2016 Team Ireland Visit

The Olympic Council of Ireland have returned from their recent Rio 2016 and Chef de Mission Kevin Kilty was impressed with the progress in Rio Olympic Village and sports venues.

Kilty said, “Our job now is to turn the athlete’s village into a homely environment for Team Ireland so it can be as productive as possible. We’re in Block 28 and it’s quite a good setting as we’re close to everything.

“We need to make this place feel like home for the athletes and to ensure that we need to make sure everything is in place for them. We did it very well in London so it’s now about replicating that this time around”

The main pre-Olympic training camp will be hugely significant in the build-up to the Games and Kilty and his team have carefully selected a venue for the final stages of preparation.

“We’re going to be based in an area called Uberlandia, which is 400 miles from Rio,” he explains. “Dr Sharon Madigan, our sports nutritionist , and Camp manager Dr Giles Warrington were in Ublerlandia last week to consult with sports venues, hospital and hotel staff including the chefs in the hotel we’ll be staying in”.

Kilty was joined on the final recce by Dermot Henihan (Sectretary General of OCI) Gillian Brosnan (Athletics Ireland) Paul McDermott (Sport Ireland) Paul McGinley (Golf Team Leader) and Deputy Chef De Mission Stephen Martin.

Kilty said “There was an opportunity for Paul McGinley to get a performance advantage as one of only three NOC’s who attended the Golf Test Event on March 8th. In addition Ireland’s Modern Pentathlon team took part in the Rio MP Test Event and gained valuable experience in the Olympic competition venue”
