BIOGRAPHY

Owen Casey competed in the men’s doubles tennis at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games alongside Eoin Collins, losing their opening round match to the Israeli combination by three sets to one.

Tennis returned to the Olympic programme at Seoul after a 64-year absence. Casey went on to compete again at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where he competed in both the men’s singles – becoming the first Irish player to qualify for the men’s singles in Olympic tennis – and the men’s doubles, again with Collins. He also competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in men’s doubles with Scott Barron.

He was the #1 tennis player in Irish rankings in 1989, 1992, and 1995, and was winner of the Irish open men’s tennis championship in 2000. He started playing tennis when he was about seven and at 16, having won several junior tournaments all over Ireland, he took up a scholarship at Anderson Junior College in South Carolina in the USA, in August 1986. He moved just up the road to Clemson University in 1988 where he was to remain until 1990 before returning to Ireland and turning professional. During his time in South Carolina, he won the US Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Championship (NJCAA) with Anderson JC in 1987 and 1988, and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title with Clemson in 1989.

Casey played in the Davis Cup for many years, winning 33 of his 49 matches. He reached his highest ATP ranking in 1992 when he was world number 228. Following the conclusion of his professional playing career, Casey became a successul coach, running a tennis camp in Dublin.
