Marion Madine

Swimming

BIOGRAPHY

Marion Madine competed in the women’s 200 metres freestyle and 100 metres butterfly at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, representing the third generation of a remarkable Irish swimming family.

Her grandfather Bobby Madine was Irish team manager-coach at Atlanta and a former national champion swimmer in the 1960s, while her grandmother Heather Agnew had dominated Irish freestyle swimming across the same era, winning thirteen individual national titles between 1965 and 1968 and reducing the championship record by 10.20 seconds.

Swimming in the third heat of the 200 metres freestyle, Madine finished just 0.21 seconds outside her personal best — a fine performance on the Olympic stage. She also competed in the 100 metres butterfly, recording 1:03.80.
