Kevin McLaverty competed in the men's Finn class one-person dinghy at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, finishing 31st of 35 boats in Ireland's first appearance in that class at Olympic level.
Before focusing on his Finn campaign, McLaverty had established himself as a sailor of exceptional range and ambition: he made the first crossing of the North Channel in a kayak, and as part of a three-man team circumnavigated Ireland aboard an 18-foot keel boat - the smallest vessel to complete that journey while living aboard. He also sailed GP14s and crewed a Flying Dutchman alongside European Champion Keith Paul.
After his sailing career he worked for Bord Iascaigh Mhara and later served as principal of the National Fishing College in Greencastle, County Donegal. He was also a talented woodworker and traditional musician.
