Harry Byrne competed in the men's Dragon class sailing at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games as part of a crew alongside Robin Hennessy and Joe MacMenamin (who crewed in the first two races before being replaced by Treen Morris), finishing 16th of 26 boats.
The Dragon crew had established themselves as credible medal candidates in the pre-Olympic circuit, a status undermined by the illness of original crew member Owen Delany, whose tactical expertise and strategic decision-making had been central to their preparation.
Without Delany, the crew adapted as best they could - MacMenamin and Morris stepping in as substitutes - and completed the regatta in 16th. Byrne's role was to focus on trimming the sails while helmsman Robin Hennessy concentrated on sailing.
