Barnes and Joyce progress

Paddy Barnes joined David Oliver Joyce, Adam Nolan and Tommy McCarthy in the quarter-finals of the AIBA European Olympic qualifying event with an inside the distance win in Trabzon, Turkey today.

Both Barnes, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 Olympics, and Joyce, are both just one win away from qualifying for the 2012 Olympics following today’s victories as semi-final finishes in both the light-flyweight and lightweight classes will book tickets for the 30th Olympiad.

Barnes was trailing 4-2 at the end of the first round versus Istvan Ungvari today, but forced the Hungarian light-fly into a standing count in round twoand the ref stopped the contest.

He’ll now face Romania’s Stefan Caslarov, who reached the quarter-finals  of the IABA hosted 2011 European Youth Championships at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, in Wednesday’s 49kg quarter-final.

Earlier today. David Oliver Joyce produced a“brill-iant” performance by the banks of the Black Sea.

The St Michael’s Athy lightweight posted a comprehensive 24-14 win over Germany’s Arthur Bril.

Joyce was 15-10 up going into the final round and racked up another 10 points in the final frame.

He’ll now meet 2010 Olympic Youth champion Evaldas Petrauskas of Lithuania, who he sparred with at Ireland’s recent training camp in the Ukraine, in the last-eight tomorrow afternoon for a place at the 2012 Olympics.

Adam Nolan and Tommy McCarthy will also be involved in quarter-final bouts tomorrow. Nolan needs to reach the welterweight final to secure Olympic qualification.

McCarthy must win gold to qualify for London 2012 as there is only one Olympic place left for Europe in the heavyweight division.

The Trabzon tournament is the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association  lodged a protest at the result of Joe Ward’s last-16 bout with Bahran Muzaffer of Turkey last night.

Muzaffer was controversially adjudged to have beaten Ward 18-15 in the light-heavyweight clash at the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in Trabzon.

IABA President Tommy Murphy, who said he believed  that Ward clearly won the contest, confirmed that the protest had been lodged.

However the protest was unsuccessful. Its a huge dissapointment for Ward and coach Billy Walsh.

Walsh was of the opinion Ward won the first two rounds and could not comprehend how he convincingly lost the third round and conceded six points to lose the fight 18-15.

“In the last round I thought Joe did all the cleanest scoring. It’s pretty seldom you get six points against . . . It’s so unfortunate,” said Walsh. “He’s had two chances to qualify (here and last year’s World Championships) and he hasn’t done it. He’s probably one of the best boxers in the world in the weight division. He’s ahead of his time with regard to Olympic qualification. He’s 18 years of age. He really should be looking at it the next time around.

“He’s a colossal talent. He’s up there with some of the best in the world. A month ago he beat the World and European champion in the Chemistry Cup (multi-nations event), beat the world number two. He’ll be up there with them all and they will be all very happy he’s not qualified or going to London because he’s getting better every day. I’m very disappointed with the scoring ”

Earlier in the evening, Belfast heavyweight Tommy  McCarthy convincingly beat Copla Alem (Bosnia & Herzegovina) 12-3 to progress to the quarter-finals.

But Tipperary super-heavyweight Con Sheehan  bowed out following a 17-12 reversal to Muhammer Erkan Aci of Turkey.

MacCarthy, who needs to win gold in Trabzon to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games, will meet Josepf Darmos (Hungary) on Wednesday.

In the afternoon session, Ireland experienced contrasting fortunes with Adam Nolan advancing but Ross Hickey losing out in Trabzon.

Bray BC welterweight Nolan, who will qualify for London if he reaches the 69kg final, posted a 14-9 decision over Poland’s Thomasz Kot.

But Hickey, who boxes out of the Grangecon BC, lost 24-11 to impressive Moldovan light-welterweight Dimitri Galagot.

Hickey’s reversal means that Ireland will not be represented at light- welterweight at the 2012 Olympic Games as the Trabzon tournament is the final Olympic qualifier for European (male) boxers.

Nolan will now meet Tamerlan Abdullayer of Azerbaijan in the last-eight on Wednesday. Abdullayer edged out  Simeon Chamov (Bulgaria) on a countback .

Boxing Qualifiers Day 1

Joe Ward and David Oliver Joyce got  Ireland off to a winning start on the opening day of the AIBA Olympic qualifiers  in Trabzon, Turkey.

Ward, the current European  light-heavyweight champion, recorded a 16-6 win over experienced Swedish  light-heavyweight Kennedy Katende last night.

And St Michael’s Athy lightweight Joyce  had his hand raised in victory after Joe Cordina of Wales was retired by his own  corner after taking two standing counts in the third.

Joyce was 10-4 down after the first round  but turned things around in spectacular style in the second to command a 17-14  lead going into the third and final frame.

Ward will now meet Bahran Muzaffer of  Turkey, who Ken Egan beat en route to silver at the 2008 Olympic games  in Beijing, in the last-16 tomorrow, while Joyce faces Germany’s Arthur Bril in  the last-16 on Tuesday in a repeat of the recent Chemistry Cup  quarter-final which Joyce won on a countback following a 16-16 tie in Germany.

Irish head coach Billy Walsh said that  they were delighted to get off to a winning start.

“It’s a great boost to the rest of the squad to make a winning start and it will give the squad confidence going into  their contests. David was 10-4 down after the first but he produced a fantastic second round and really turned it around, said Walsh.

“Joe was in against a very experienced  opponent and it was a fine win. He was in control and he did what he had to do.”

Ward, Ross Hickey, Adam Nolan, Tommy  McCarthy and Con Sheehan will be in action today.

Paddy Barnes received a bye into the last-16 and will between the ropes Tuesday.

The Trabzon tournament is the final AIBA Olympic qualifier for Europe’s male boxers.
