Amsterdam 1928 was a landmark Games: women competed in athletics for the first time and an Olympic flame was lit at the opening ceremony for the first time.
Pat O'Callaghan won the hammer throw gold - Ireland's first Olympic gold medal as an independent nation and only the second Irish Olympic gold in history.
Marguerite Dockrell became Ireland's first female Olympic swimmer. In boxing Matt Flanagan, who carried the Irish flag at the Opening Ceremony, and fellow boxers Frankie Traynor, PJ Lenihan and Jack Chase all won bouts, with Traynor reaching the semi-finals before a controversial disqualification that drew protests from multiple nations.
Nine Irish artists exhibited in the arts programme.
